Functional Neurological Disorders symptoms are not only misunderstood, but little is known. Functional Neurological Disorder [FND] is where the nervous system malfunctions in absence of identifiable physical illness. It is not known how or why FND occurs, but recent scans of brain activity indicate dysfunction in brain areas controlling planning and initiation of movement and self- agency.
A computer analogy is commonly used to explain FND/CD as a glitch in how the brain is sending and receiving messages in the body. This glitch can be the product of many other disorders or of unknown cause. Many people with FND/CD find frustration with the lack of information and the inability to fully identify the root cause of this disorder.
