Below are book selections Lynda has found to be insightful. They are not specifically about functional disorders, they are about creating good health, and finding healing through a positive natural approach. FINDING ALTERNATIVES
LYNDA
I had never heard of Functional Dissociative Seizures until my husband’s “unexplained” medical symptoms were given this label. This diagnosis started our journey of discovery to find out more about the condition. Thanks to the psychologist we soon found Dr Stones Website and that has proved very helpful in understanding that all the other symptoms that my husband had been experiencing where all part of the same condition.
Discussions with various doctors, others who had the condition and information on line soon showed that the conventional medical approach to illness had little to offer. It seemed to both of us that the best way of finding a way through this challenging and often frightening time was to do what felt right for him and for us.
Taking loads of drugs with limited or little effectiveness and potential for unwelcome side effects seemed to us to push good health further away and give his body more problems to cope with. That didn’t make sense.
From his point of view as the “sufferer” and from my point of view as a carer it makes sense to us to put all our energy and focus on what we want to achieve – improved health. This action plan involves making the most of the times he has good days or moments in the days and finding coping mechanisms to help him through the episodes which allow them to come and go without over focussing on them and adding to the impact on our lives. My husband is adamant that he is not going to become the label that has been given to him. Choosing to believe this is something that is happening, rather than allowing the condition to become his life. A discussion with the health professionals confirmed this was a good approach.
We acknowledge that although this condition has tipped our life upside down, it has brought unexpected blessings and opportunities too and at times the possibility and courage to follow the whispers of our hearts. For this we are grateful.
With this as a small window into a much larger belief and understanding it may then be understood why a more holistic approach is for us. Looking at ways to strengthen the body and mind and energy into a strong and health promoting space where imbalance and illness can’t survive easily. This has become our way, our approach to creating a healthier, happy vibrant life. Wishing you all the best health and happiness on your chosen pathway.
