Professor Mark Edwards has joined the FND Hope International Medical Advisory Board. Professor Edwards is a movement specialist at St George’s, University of London Atkinson Morley Regional Neuroscience Centre. Professor Edwards transferred in 2015 from Sobell Department of Motor Neuroscience and Movement Disorders at UCL Institute of Neurology where he was a Senior Lecturer.
Professor Edwards attends to approximately 400 new patients each year with functional symptoms. He has focused on seeing FND patients in a concentrated way since approximately 2010. Over the coarse of seeing functional patients throughout many years prior Professor Edwards noted: “I had developed an interest in this group of people who seemed to be neglected by mainstream neurology.”
Professor Edwards was then asked which direction he intended to focus his research now and in the future, his response was: “I hope to continue in this area of research and plan for it to be a major focus for my research and clinical work for the rest of my career. I find that it complements my other research and clinical interests (in a topic called “motor control”, i.e. how the brain controls movement), and the group of neurological conditions called “movement disorders” which include Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia, etc.”
