The Secret Mind of Bertha Pappenheim: A Virtual Book Launch Event
April 18 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm UTC-5
Join FND Hope as we celebrate the launch of The Secret Mind of Bertha Pappenheim: The Woman Who Invented Freud’s Talking Cure by Gabriel Brownstein.
In 1880, Bertha Pappenheim’s mysterious illness led to her pioneering the “talking cure” with Josef Breuer, later adopted by Sigmund Freud. Despite Freud’s misrepresentation, debates about her illness and treatment have persisted.
Gabriel Brownstein’s work delves into these controversies while illuminating Pappenheim’s legacy as a feminist thinker in 19th-century Vienna. He also parallels her story with modern medical advancements, exploring conditions like FND and the evolving neuroscience of therapy. “The Secret Mind of Bertha Pappenheim” advocates for the power of listening and highlights emerging “talking cures” rooted in contemporary neuroscience.
The event will feature a panel discussion featuring:
– Gabriel Brownstein, author
– Professor Jon Stone, Neurologist and FND Researcher
– Bridget Mildon, Founder/CEO of FND Hope
